WHY YOU NEED A PRODUCER

It doesn't matter what flavor you want—glossy "expensive" sound, grunge basement, sweet purity, or total art—my job is quality control, making sure we squeeze the most flavor out of your project. Your producer is on alert to make sure that all weak points are made strong and nothing goes unnoticed. Contract me to catalyze three things:

1. Recording Vision

  • Probe old and devise new recording techniques
  • Realize hidden potential
  • Oversee orchestral layering
  • Capture you at your best

2. Project Management

  • Understand the big picture, avoid problems
  • Leverage your budget and schedule
  • Work with the engineer to create your amazing sound

3. Sell Your Sound

  • Validate the value of your work
  • Make your recording irresistible, captivating
  • Unveil the core of your art—people buy and play songs over and over when they feel a full delivery!
  • Save you money during production and make you money in sales. It's well worth the investment.

ENGINEER

Tracking & Mixing. The man at the console. I specialize in subtle inner depths—whether acoustic or electronic—dynamics, stroking and coaxing your waveform, micro editing. I start from scratch for each project, testing and building the elements in a new way each time. No formulaic assembly.

Audio Restoration, Enhancement & Remixing - Clean up time! Bring out the old tapes & files. We can make them sound better than the original. Inject more space, presence, and lusciousness into those old mixes with a re-mix. Got a speech full of stutters & coughs? Let's remove the clutter and make you sound sharp.

TESTIMONIALS

“San Quinton is a professional and dedicated engineer. Our schedule was very tight and we had to fit huge chunks of time in a small amount of days. He was eager to finish our project and finish it right. He spent more than 8 hours straight in one recording session to help us finish our project! His calm demeanor made him a pleasure to work with. I highly recommend Quinton!”
     —Dale Pluciennik (Ramona, California)

“I still get compliments on the quality of the tracks I recorded with Quinton. He has a great ear, and his attention to detail really brings out your best possible sound. He created an environment where I felt relaxed enough to create and be free, because I knew all the technical details were in good hands. Definitely my best recording experience to date, and the best results I've ever had.”
     —Draza Jansky (San Diego, California)

“Working with Quinton in the recording studio was an excellent experience. As an engineer, he is very skilled. I feel like he did a great job of capturing me, as a performer, at my very best. As a producer, he did a great job of maintaining the direction of the session, while at the same time allowing me to freely express my artistic vision.”
     —Ryan Lane (Portland, Oregon)

“My recording studio business...requires, in addition to musical knowledge and an innate sense of performance timing, a deep background in art, literature, grammar, science, and obviously the tech and computer savvy involved in music production. Quinton is definitely a Renaissance person, having attended Columbia University and Parsons School of Design. Additionally he has performed in bands and theatrical groups in NYC and overseas. He has a passion for music, and has been spending good amounts of time working in that area, at Signature Sound and elsewhere. ...He is able to take ownership of a project and communicate effectively with clients. He takes initiative, suggesting ways clients can raise the bar in their production quality...And he does so with the utmost studio tact. ...When products go to duplicator with our company's reputation on the line, Quinton is often the last to touch it. I am confident every time a package is shipped out. He is a quick study, and works efficiently and with attention to detail. So I have found his rate to be quite reasonable. There is always fantastic return on investment for the studio.”
—Scott Higby, Owner, Studio C (San Diego, California)

“Quinton Carlson is an outstanding sound engineer, producer, and musician. He has engineered and produced several projects I have worked on, with results that have consistently exceeded my highest expectations. In the studio I have always found him efficient, professional, and skilled, and with a special flair for creative problem solving. Recently he remastered 20-year old recordings of my band from some cheap and noisy magnetic tapes with astonishingly clear and balanced results. I cannot recommend Quinton highly enough. He is who you want for any project which requires technical proficiency, dedication, and a brilliant and sensitive ear.”
     —Matthew Offenbacher (Seattle, Washington)

“Quinton brings a unique, personal touch to every project. His developed and discriminating ear allows him to capture the right sounds in the right places. It's always a pleasure to work with Quinton as he always holds the quality of the entire production foremost in his mind.”
     —David Casey (Valencia, California)

“I asked Quinton to clean up a number of live outdoor recordings originally done on a 1970s-era cassette deck with poor condenser microphones. The results were better than I imagined, reducing the often overbearing tape noise without negatively affecting any aspect of the performance. In fact he improved it. Thanks Q!”
     —Dave Robertson (Portland, Oregon)

“Quinton is an enthusiastic team player with a very friendly attitude and high ethical standards...he maintained an impeccable record of hard work, attention to detail, honesty and total commitment to our business...I am certain he will always make a positive contribution as an employee”
—Luis Areteaga, Owner, Signature Sound (San Diego)

READY TO RECORD?

CHOOSE YOUR PEOPLE FIRST, THEN THE STUDIO...

First choose your Producer. You may choose me as the new artist on your team, or another producer such as yourself.

Second, choose your Engineer. Your engineer has the greatest impact on the sound of your recording. Every engineer will capture your sound differently. A studio is only a set of tools—it's the engineer who uses those tools to mic your tones, process the juice, and mix the final output. Let's find the engineer who matches your style. Many producers are themselves talented engineers, and can wear both hats for a project.

Third, choose your Studio. Work with your producer and engineer to select the right studio. Assess studios by caliber of gear, sound and size of the tracking rooms, customer service, comfort and price.

Fourth, Organize. What will you record onto? Tape? Hard drive? Buy it. Before you book your sessions, be fully rehearsed. Plan in advance all the elements you want to record, thus saving time & expense at the session.

Fifth, Record! Woo hoo!
